As a style, French Gypsy Jazz conjures up a very specific scene in my mind; 1930's, smokey, underground bar, a tiny stage crammed with musicians and a dance floor as lively as ants on a picnic. For this particular gig, only the latter was true, but it's my favourite part of that imagined scenario.
Wonderful host, Manek along with his friends graced the dance floor with a close quarters style of swing dancing; Balboa. It was incredible to watch, and suited the lively, guitar solo filled music in accompaniment.
Ultrafox, a usual five piece stripped down to three for the evening, were phenomenal. They took Manek's lounge room and turned it into a 1930's speakeasy that Django Reinhardt himself would have been proud of.
