Twenty-odd people stood quietly in a bedroom waiting patiently for the arrival of Sam, the evening’s unsuspecting host. At which point we would all jump out in a chorus of, “SURPRISE!” After a couple of false starts, Sam arrived and surprise him we did.
Amongst the unexpected guests was the Melbourne four piece, Big Smoke, whose brand of folk-country inspired rock 'n' roll was to be the entertainment for the night. Their usual rolling drums and amplified guitar were stripped down suitably for Sam and Lou’s lounge room, giving space for their harmonies and subtle guitar solos. Even baby Thomas loved every moment, particularly the part where everyone clapped.
With a superb view of the city lights spread out behind them, Big Smoke captivated the crowd with their finely crafted melodies and passionate performance.
